Defining Comprehension
* "Reading comprehension is the process of using one's own prior knowledge and the writer's cues from the text to infer the author's intended meaning" (Miller, 2011, p.54).
* There are three sets of factors that influence comprehension: the reader, the text, and the context of reading" (Miller, 2011, p.54).
*The 3 components for text comprehension:
1) The reader: Brings prior knowledge to the text, helping to construct meaning.
2) The text: The difficulty of vocabulary and visual aids play a role in comprehension.
3) The context: The environment and motivation a student has for reading impacts comprehension.
